How a Pool Cover Affects Your Pool Water Chemistry

Chlorine: less lost to the sun

Sunlight breaks down chlorine fast, especially in the UAE summer. An uncovered pool loses a lot of its sanitiser to UV every day, so it needs topping up again and again. A cover that blocks sunlight protects the chlorine you already have in the water, so levels stay steadier and you need less to keep the pool safe.

Cyanuric acid: fewer top-ups, less build-up

Cyanuric acid is a stabiliser that shields chlorine from the sun. The catch is that it does not break down. Stabilised chlorine tablets add more of it every time they dissolve, and it keeps accumulating. Above 50, chlorine works less effectively.

A cover helps in two ways. Because the sun destroys less chlorine, you need to add less of it. And with less evaporation, you top up with fresh water less often, which helps keep dissolved minerals down.

pH: slower drift

pH tends to creep upwards as a pool aerates and as dust and debris wash in. A closed cover reduces both, so pH stays closer to the 7.2 to 7.6 sweet spot for longer. You still need to test it, but you will be correcting it less often.

Alkalinity: protected from dust and rain

Total alkalinity acts as a buffer that keeps pH from swinging. Dust, leaves and rainwater all push it around. A cover keeps them out, so alkalinity stays steadier between tests.

Chlorine demand: a cleaner pool needs less

Dust, sand, leaves and insects all use up chlorine as it breaks them down. Every bit of debris a cover keeps out is chlorine you do not have to replace. An opaque slatted cover also blocks the light algae needs to grow, which matters in hot weather.

Cover type matters

Not every cover behaves the same. An opaque slatted or PVC cover blocks light almost completely. A clear or translucent polycarbonate pool cover lets some light and heat through, which warms the water but also gives algae a little more to work with. An automatic pool cover is the most convenient option, because it opens and closes in seconds, so it actually gets used every day. A cover you rarely close does very little for your chemistry.

A cover does not replace testing

A cover makes your water chemistry easier to keep stable. It does not fix poor dosing. We recently tested a pool where chlorine was being added without any measurements. The readings were:

  • Cyanuric acid: 113 (target: 50 or below)

  • Total alkalinity: 0 (target: 80 to 120)

  • Chlorine: above the tester’s range (target: 0.1 to 6)

  • pH: below the tester’s range (target: 7.2 to 7.6)

All four were outside the recommended range. Chlorine tablets carry other added chemicals, and when they are dropped in without testing, water chemistry can end up dangerously uncontrolled, which is a health risk for everyone using the pool. Very high chlorine levels with a closed cover are also not ideal for the cover itself, so always test before dosing, and ask your cover supplier what chemical levels their material is rated for.

One more way to keep your water balanced

A salt chlorinator is a natural partner for a pool cover. Instead of buying and handling chlorine tablets, the system makes chlorine from a little pool salt every day while the pump runs, so levels stay steady, there is no tablet-driven build-up of cyanuric acid, and the water feels softer on skin and eyes. Day-to-day upkeep drops to adding salt now and then and cleaning the cell, and the main ongoing cost becomes replacing the cell every few years instead of a season of chemicals. Ask us about a salt chlorinator when you request your cover quote.
